If your emails aren\u2019t accessible, you\u2019re creating barriers for real people who want to engage with your content. Screen reader users alone represent a potential $59 million in lost revenue.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Accessibility improves clarity and usability for everyone<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accessible design isn\u2019t just about screen readers or legal standards. It makes emails easier to read, navigate, and interact with for all users. If your email looks like a puzzle, it\u2019s going to read like one, too.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Use semantic HTML and descriptive elements<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behind every accessible email is well-structured code. Use semantic tags like\u00a0<code>&lt;h1&gt;<\/code>,\u00a0<code>&lt;h2&gt;<\/code>, and\u00a0<code>&lt;p&gt;<\/code>\u00a0instead of styled\u00a0<code>&lt;div&gt;<\/code>elements. Always include descriptive\u00a0<code>alt<\/code>\u00a0attributes for images and avoid using images to convey critical information without a text fallback.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s also important not to rely solely on color to convey meaning or storytelling (red is bad, green is good). Use labels, patterns, or icons alongside color cues.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Follow accessibility standards<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say it with us \u201cWCAG\u2026 Wackaaaag\u2026Wucagh?\u201d It\u2019s a difficult acronym to pronounce but we do love to say it. One thing the EAA doesn\u2019t do is tell us exactly what the EAA accessibility standards are, and they don\u2019t really\u00a0<em>need<\/em>\u00a0to since these standards are well established.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WCAG, or Web Content Accessibility Guidelines are guidelines created by the Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) to ensure content accessibility on the internet for people with disabilities.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/TR\/WCAG22\/\">You can find the guidelines here<\/a>.<\/p>\n    <div data-content-type=\"longform\" class=\"quote hub-quote longform-spacings d-flex flex-column rounded-lg px-5 py-6 px-md-6 py-md-7 p-lg-7 shadow-sm bg-primary\" data-theme=\"light\">\r\n\r\n        <div class=\"quote-logo mb-3\">\r\n                            <svg height=\"40\" class=\"quote-icon quote-icon-color\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/sinch-core\/assets\/icons\/custom-icons\/quotes-right.svg\"><\/svg>\r\n                    <\/div>\r\n\r\n        <blockquote class=\"quote-content content-body m-0 text-body-color\" id=\"quote-block-ccf6802a4ca7b57e7a38ebdb6b8cc4e1\">\r\n            &#8222;Accessibility is not just I want to avoid a fine or this is not applicable to me. You should get in the habit of using screen readers, keyboard navigation, and contrast checkers as part of your QA process. Tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/chromewebstore.google.com\/detail\/axe-devtools-web-accessib\/lhdoppojpmngadmnindnejefpokejbdd?hl=en-US&amp;pli=1\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">axe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wave.webaim.org\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WAVE<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.freedomscientific.com\/products\/software\/jaws\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JAWS<\/a>, or even other browser dev tools can catch common accessibility issues.<\/p>\n    <div data-content-type=\"longform\"  class=\"callout text-body-color px-5 py-6 px-md-6 px-lg-7 py-md-7 longform-spacings rounded-lg bg-light\" data-theme=\"light\">\r\n\r\n        <div class=\"content-body\"> Check out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailjet.com\/blog\/email-best-practices\/accessibility-testing-tools\/\">this big list of accessibility tools and best practices<\/a> from Mailjet.<\/div>\r\n    <\/div>\r\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Mailgun and Mailjet are doing to help<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, shameless plug incoming, ESPs will also have accessibility checkers and tools built-in to make your email process easier and more compliant. It\u2019s like GDPR, you don\u2019t need a .fr domain to fall under the law. EAA also covers anyone who has EU citizenship even if they are living in the U.S. or elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Q: Are there actual fines for noncompliance? Will there be a grace period?<\/b><br \/><b>A:<\/b> Typically, fines will kind of have a bit of a grace period. It&#8217;s not like you turn this on and then suddenly everyone&#8217;s getting hit with fines, but ultimately yes, so get your ducks in a row now.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Q: Should we audit every email we\u2019ve ever sent?<\/b><br \/><b>A: <\/b>Begin with your highest-touch templates first, and if you&#8217;re missing one, apply your brand kit to your email designs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check your highest-touch templates first, the ones that your customers are going to see the most.
