The Rackspace team has been using Mailgun for a variety of projects (<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/how-node-js-app-cloud-monitoring-uses-the-mailgun-api\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>like this one<\/i><\/a><i>), and just open-sourced an SDK for integrating Mailgun in iOS apps. Jay actually sits right behind the Mailgun team in Rackspace\u2019s San Francisco office. We\u2019re publishing the full post here on our blog, but we highly encourage you to check out the Rackspace DevOps blog for other good technical articles.<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of my favorite services here at Rackspace is Mailgun, a set of APIs that allow you to send email and manage mailing lists via a REST API. Coming back from a recent trip to San Antonio I decided that I would add an Objective-C interface to send email via Mailgun using my own iOS interfaceinstead of using Apple\u2019s\u00a0MFMailComposeViewController. This library is now\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/rackerlabs\/objc-mailgun\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">open sourced on Github<\/a>\u00a0and available via\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cocoapods.org\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cocoapods<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Installing<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To install the Mailgun SDK, you can either use the fantastic\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cocoapods.org\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cocoapods<\/a>\u00a0or install directly from the source by adding the\u00a0Mailgun.(h|m)\u00a0and\u00a0MGMessage.(h|m)\u00a0to your Xcode project. If you choose to install manually you will also need to follow the instructions to install the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/AFNetworking\/AFNetworking\/wiki\/Getting-Started-with-AFNetworking\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AFNetworking<\/a>\u00a0library.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Using the Mailgun SDK<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently the only functions of the Mailgun API the SDK supports are sending e-mail, subscribing to mailing lists and unsubscribing to mailing lists. I felt that these are the most common features an app developer would use but more features of the Mailgun API will be added in the future. Full Documentation for the library can be found in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/rackerlabs\/objc-mailgun\/tree\/master\/Docs\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Docs directory on Github<\/a>\u00a0or on &lt;<a href=\"http:\/\/cocoadocs.org\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">cocoadocs.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sending a Message<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To quickly send a message via the Mailgun SDK, we\u2019ll create our client using the Class method\u00a0clientWithDomain:apiKey:\u00a0the arguments to this method being your specific Mailgun domain and API key. For this example, we will be using\u00a0<code>samples.mailgun.org<\/code>\u00a0and\u00a0<code>key-3ax6xnjp29jd6fds4gc373sgvjxteol0.<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Mailgun *mailgun = [Mailgun clientWithDomain:@\"samples.mailgun.org\" apiKey:@\"key-3ax6xnjp29jd6fds4gc373sgvjxteol0\"];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Message sending can happen in several ways. You can use the instance method\u00a0<code>sendMessageTo:from:subject:body<\/code>\u00a0to quickly fire off a simple, \u201cone off\u201d message like so:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>[mailgun sendMessageTo:@\"Jay Baird &lt;jay.baird@rackspace.com&gt;\" from:@\"Excited User &lt;someone@sample.org&gt;\" subject:@\"Mailgun is awesome!\" body:@\"A unicode snowman for you! \"];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also construct a more featureful message using the\u00a0MGMessage\u00a0object. Here I\u2019ll create an\u00a0MGMessage\u00a0object with an image attachment of a cat, because the Internet exists solely to proliferate pictures of cats, and send it via the SDK:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>UIImage *catImage = [UIImage imageNamed:@\"cat-pic-01\"]; MGMessage *message = [MGMessage messageFrom:@\"Excited User &lt;someone@sample.org&gt;\" to:@\"Jay Baird &lt;jay.baird@rackspace.com&gt;\" subject:@\"Mailgun is awesome!\" body:@\"Mailgun is great, here is a picture of a cat.\"];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>[message addImage:catImage withName:@\u201dcat-pic-01\u2033 type:PNGFileType];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This attaches a\u00a0UIImage\u00a0to the\u00a0MGMessage\u00a0I created. The data from the\u00a0UIImage\u00a0will be added as an attachment to the message.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>An identical interface exists for OS X that takes an\u00a0NSImage\u00a0and a\u00a0NSBitmapImageFileType.<\/i><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once our message is constructed we can add recipients via the\u00a0<code>addRecipient:<\/code>\u00a0method, add CC and BCC recipients via\u00a0<code>addCC:<\/code>\u00a0and\u00a0<code>addBCC:<\/code>\u00a0and also add\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.mailgun.com\/en\/latest\/api-tags.html?utm_source=mailgun&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=SDK%202013%20Blog%20Post\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">tags<\/a>, variables and a whole host of other features supported by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/documentation.mailgun.com\/en\/latest\/api_reference.html?utm_source=mailgun&amp;utm_medium=blog&amp;utm_campaign=SDK%202013%20Blog%20Post\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mailgun API<\/a>.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/github.com\/rackerlabs\/objc-mailgun\/blob\/master\/Classes\/MGMessage.h\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Take a look at the header<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0MGMessage.h\u00a0to see all that is supported.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To send this specially constructed message you can use the client methods\u00a0<code>sendMessage:<\/code>\u00a0or the block-based callback method\u00a0<code>sendMessage:success:failure:<\/code>. Here we\u2019ll use the latter to show the user a message when the\u00a0MGMessage\u00a0is successfully sent or display an error if there was an error.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>[mailgun sendMessage:message success:^(NSString *messageId) {<br \/>    NSLog(@\"Message %@ sent successfully!\", messageId);<br \/>} failure:^(NSError *error) {<br \/>    NSLog(@\"Error sending message. The error was: %@\", [error userInfo]);<br \/>}];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Subscribing\/Unsubscribing to Mailing Lists<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mailgun\u2019s mailing lists provide a convenient way to send to multiple recipients by using an alias email address. Mailgun sends a copy of the message sent to the alias address to each subscribed member of the mailing list. Adding a subscribe\/unsubscribe feature to your app can be a great way to stay engaged and in touch with your customers by sending them periodic updates and tips. To subscribe a user to a mailing list, we\u2019ll use the same Mailgun client we created in the first example:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>Mailgun *mailgun = [Mailgun clientWithDomain:@\"samples.mailgun.org\" apiKey:@\"key-3ax6xnjp29jd6fds4gc373sgvjxteol0\"];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this example, I have created an\u00a0AboutViewController\u00a0that has a\u00a0UITextFieldv where a user can enter their email address and tap a subscribe button. Here\u2019s how I handle the subscribe button\u2019s action:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>UITextField *mailTextField = [[UITextField alloc] initWithFrame:CGRectZero];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>[mailgun subscribeToList:@\u201dnews@sampleapp.org\u201d email:mailTextField.text success:^{<br \/>NSLog(@\u201dSuccessfully subscribed user to mailing list!\u201d);<br \/>} failure:^(NSError *error) {<br \/>NSLog(@\u201dThere was an error while subscribing to the mailing list: %@\u201d, [error userInfo]<\/code><br \/><code>); }];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The success and failure blocks can be used to display more information to the user, track analytics and show\/dismiss progress while the SDK is making the necessary API calls.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To unsubscribe the process is similar. We take the email of a subscribed user, in this case we\u2019ll use my email address\u00a0jay.baird@rackspace.com\u00a0and unsubscribe from the SampleApp mailing list:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>NSString *emailAddress = @\"jay.baird@rackspace.com\";<\/code>\n<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code>[mailgun unsubscribeToList:@\u201dnews@sampleapp.org\u201d email:emailAddress success:^{<br \/>NSLog(@\u201dSuccessfully removed %@ from the mailing list\u201d, emailAddress);<br \/>} failure:^(NSError *error) {<br \/>NSLog(@\u201dError removing address from mailing list: %@\u201d, [error userInfo]<\/code><br \/><code>); }];<\/code><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>NOTE<\/b>: If a user is not subscribed to a mailing list this method will call the failure block with a 404 error. This is normal and should be handled appropriately.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hope this brief introduction to the new Mailgun SDK gets you as excited as I am to add Mailgun features to your next OS X or iOS project.
