In the current global economic climate, it feels a little like we\u2019re being tossed around in an unpredictable storm. However, there is something that IT professionals and others in the technology community can do to fight back against one factor that\u2019s dragging the economy down.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the firm <a href=\"https:\/\/cybersecurityventures.com\/hackerpocalypse-cybercrime-report-2016\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cybersecurity Ventures<\/a>, cybercrime cost the world <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/global-cost-of-cybercrime-topped-6-trillion-in-2021-defence-firm-01652198407\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more than $6 trillion<\/a> in 2021, and it\u2019s expected to top $7 trillion in 2022. <b>If cybercriminals had their own country, they\u2019d run the third-largest economy on the planet behind only the US and China<\/b>. What\u2019s more? Cybersecurity Ventures expects the cost of cyberattacks to hit $10.5 trillion in 2025.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cybercrime is an actual business \u2013 a dirty, illegal one that works on the dark web \u2013 but a business just the same. It even has its own techy acronym: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/what-is-cybercrime-as-a-service\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cybercrime as a Service (CaaS)<\/a>. In a special report from Mailgun, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/recursos\/estudio\/encuesta-economia-email\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Email in an evolving economy: The tech perspective<\/a>\u201d, we homed in on responses from those in the IT and engineering communities.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When asked to choose three economic factors that could negatively affect their businesses in the next year, participants selected the usual suspects most often. <b>Inflation<\/b> (55.9%), <b>Reduced consumer spending<\/b>, (40.6%), and <b>Energy\/transportation costs<\/b> (29.3%) topped our survey\u2019s list as well as many other polls on the global economy. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little further down the list is <b>Cyberattacks<\/b>. That includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/dk-en\/security\/data-breach\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IBM<\/a>, which released a report estimating <b>the average cost of a single data breach in 2022 was $4.35 million<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, however, is the <i>global<\/i> average. In the United States, IBM says a typical data breach could cost organizations $9.44 million, which is more than double the average and the highest in the world.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s important to remember that email is the biggest threat vector, and the channel is often at the center of many data breaches and attempted cyberattacks. In fact, it\u2019s believed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.csoonline.com\/article\/2133553\/91--of-targeted-attacks-start-with-spear-phishing-email.html\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>91% of cyberattacks<\/b><\/a><b> start with a phishing email<\/b>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.proofpoint.com\/us\/resources\/threat-reports\/state-of-phish\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">research from Proofpoint<\/a>, threats involving email are reported more often than any other method. The sheer number of successful phishing attacks combined with the cost of a cybersecurity breach make it clear how cyber threats can have serious consequences for the economy. <b>Cybercrime hurts business of all types and sizes<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a global recession, like the one we seem to be facing now, there are always going to be businesses that fail to survive such a major economic downturn. When so many organizations are financially strapped, the last thing you want is a breach that unexpectedly costs millions of dollars.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We know that sounds like fear mongering. Use multifactor authentication and SSO<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it\u2019s not foolproof, multifactor or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/product\/protege-tu-cuenta-autenticacion-dos-fases-seguridad\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">two-factor (2FA) authentication<\/a> is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to stop a phishing attack and make applications more secure. That\u2019s because even if cybercriminals convince someone to reveal account credentials, they still need access to the other authentication method \u2013 such as the user\u2019s mobile device.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Multifactor authentication (MFA) could also include:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Hardware tokens<\/b>: Key fobs or USBs that regularly generate different numeric codes for access.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>SMS verification codes<\/b>: Codes delivered to a user\u2019s mobile device via text message.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Push notifications<\/b>: Alerts notifying users about login attempts, which can be confirmed or denied.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Software tokens<\/b>: Software-generated passwords for one time use.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/product\/saml-sso-sign-on-available\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">single sign-on (SSO)<\/a> solution is another helpful layer of organizational security. Set up email authentication<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While MFA protects, users, employees, and the business from cybercrime, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/deliverability\/autenticacion-emails-documento-identidad-envios\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">email authentication protocols<\/a> exist to help protect the people receiving your emails. Authentication is the best way to stop the form of phishing known as email brand spoofing.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Email authentication gives mailbox providers a way to identify your emails as legitimate messages coming from a trustworthy sender. Without it, spammers and scammers can pose as your organization and trick people into giving up sensitive information.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Email authentication includes four main specifications, which are DNS TXT records that receiving mail servers will refer to when deciding how to filter incoming messages:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sender Policy Framework (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/deliverability\/spf-records-basics\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SPF<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DomainKeys Identified Mail (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/deliverability\/entender-dkim-como-funciona\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DKIM<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Domain-based Message Authentication Reporting and Conformance (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/deliverability\/implementar-dmarc\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DMARC<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Brand Indicators for Message Identification (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/deliverability\/bimi-mas-que-un-nombre-divertido\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">BIMI<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>At Mailgun, we require every sender on our platform to use SPF and DKIM at a minimum<\/b>. However, we highly recommend having an enforced DMARC policy and are big fans of BIMI, which lets senders display an official logo in the inbox.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Educate employees and users<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Email scam artists are deceptive and good at what they do. Even people with plenty of cybersecurity experience can fall for their tricks, especially when the attempt involves things like social engineering.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the best ways to improve email security is to teach people what to expect from phishing attempts. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mimecast.com\/resources\/ebooks\/the-state-of-email-security-in-finance\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mimecast found<\/a> that <b>employees who receive cybersecurity training are five times more likely to spot and avoid malicious links in emails<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mailgun\u2019s security team partially credits our employee training and awareness program for helping the company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/es\/blog\/product\/ataque-phishing-detenido\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stop a large-scale SMS phishing attack<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While you can\u2019t directly train your users or customers, you can let them know what to expect (or what not to expect). For example, if you know scammers have been trying to impersonate your brand, send out a warning so your users are on the lookout for something suspicious.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Evaluate technology partner security<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finally, your cybersecurity is only as strong as your weakest link. That means you need to pay close attention to the security practices of the vendors and solution providers your organization uses.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If one of your partners is processing sensitive data from your organization or your users, make sure they have the right certifications and undergo regular security audits. Ask about their ISO 27001 and ISO 27701 certifications and SOC 2 reports. We get it. Improving email security where you work probably won\u2019t pull the world out of a recession but what if we thought about email in the same way we think about the environment? Sure, one person who recycles or drives an electric vehicle won\u2019t do much to make a difference. It\u2019s when millions of people take action that real change starts happening. So, we all need to do our part.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you improve email security, you\u2019re preventing money from landing in the pockets of cybercriminals.
