The Grinch himself couldn\u2019t have come up with a more diabolical plan to ruin the holidays!<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supply chain became a buzzword in 2021 when expert predicted a chaotic season for shippers, carriers, retailers, and consumers who were eager to do some holiday shopping. Many of the problems were directly related to the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Consumers had pent-up demand and were ready to buy, but a host of roadblocks caused delays over the holidays and we\u2019re still not out of the woods.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here are some of the <b>biggest supply chain issues<\/b> that impacted the 2021 holiday season:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Labor shortages<\/b>: That includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/video\/2021\/10\/19\/global-truck-driver-shortages-continue-to-plague-the-supply-chain.html\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">scarcity of truck drivers<\/a> in the U.S. and Europe as well as a lack of warehouse workers and retail employees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Increased shipping and freight rates<\/b>: The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/how-to\/sending-usps-packages-will-cost-more-this-holiday-season-heres-why\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">U.S Post Office<\/a>, FedEx, UPS, and many carriers are raising their rates.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Fluctuating fuel prices<\/b>: Diesel prices recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccjdigital.com\/business\/article\/15280873\/diesel-prices-hit-sevenyear-high-with-latest-increase\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">hit a seven-year high<\/a>, and there\u2019s also a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.overdriveonline.com\/business\/article\/15281174\/diesel-shortage-hits-truck-stops-across-america\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shortage of diesel fuel<\/a>, which is commonly used in the transportation of goods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Congested ports<\/b>: This makes it difficult to move products made overseas to market. Plus a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2021-10-29\/what-is-the-great-shipping-container-shortage-covid-christmas\/100550198\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shortage of shipping containers<\/a> is making them more expensive too.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Warehouse capacity<\/b>: The explosive growth of online shopping is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketplace.org\/2021\/10\/05\/warehouse-space-is-getting-tight\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">crowding warehouse space<\/a> at stores and distribution centers, especially as retailers stock up for the holidays.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Consumer expectations<\/b>: Online shoppers expect free shipping and two-day delivery (thanks, Amazon). But that may not be realistic for many shippers in 2021.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s what the CEO of a major toymaker told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2021-10-04\/out-of-stock-shortages-for-christmas-shopping-put-retailers-at-risk\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bloomberg<\/a> about the global supply chain situation this holiday season:<\/p>\n    <div data-content-type=\"longform\" class=\"quote hub-quote longform-spacings d-flex flex-column rounded-lg px-5 py-6 px-md-6 py-md-7 p-lg-7 shadow-sm bg-primary\" data-theme=\"light\">\r\n\r\n        <div class=\"quote-logo mb-3\">\r\n                            <svg height=\"40\" class=\"quote-icon quote-icon-color\" aria-hidden=\"true\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/plugins\/sinch-core\/assets\/icons\/custom-icons\/quotes-right.svg\"><\/svg>\r\n                    <\/div>\r\n\r\n        <blockquote class=\"quote-content content-body m-0 text-body-color\" id=\"quote-block-10e47e298ecb132289b4b767d9897ee2\">\r\n            I&rsquo;ve been doing this for 43 years and never seen it this bad. Everything that can go wrong is going wrong at the same time.        <\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n                    <div class=\"d-flex gap-3 mt-5\">\r\n                                <div class=\"d-flex flex-column align-self-center fs-sm\">\r\n                    <cite class=\"mb-0 fw-bold text-accent fst-normal\" aria-describedby=\"quote-block-10e47e298ecb132289b4b767d9897ee2\">\r\n                        Isaac Larian                    <\/cite>\r\n                                            <span class=\"mb-0 text-body-color\">Founder and CEO of MGA Entertainment<\/span>\r\n                                    <\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n            <\/div>\r\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And we haven\u2019t improved too much in the last two years. <a href=\"https:\/\/fitsmallbusiness.com\/supply-chain-statistics\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">2022\u2019s supply chain issues<\/a> were mainly attributed to talent\/labor shortages, employee illness, and transportation network issues. A study out of Harvard in September 2023 shows that these sustained labor shortages are also impacting the cost of manufacturing goods and services due to increases in labor costs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March of 2023,<b><i> the <\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/research\/policy\/gscpi%23\/overview\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Supply Chain Pressure Index<\/a>\u2013 which takes into account metrics throughout the supply chain \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/loracecere\/2023\/04\/19\/supply-chain-normalcy-not-in-sight\/?sh=c5af9f16ca66\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fell to the lowest level since November 2008. One of the biggest supply chain issues in the post-pandemic economy is the ability for manufacturers to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2021\/10\/03\/semiconductor-chip-shortage-could-extend-through-2022-marvell-ceo.html\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">microchips and semiconductors<\/a>, many of which are made in Asia.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those components are used in popular electronics like cellphones as well as other hot-ticket holiday items that are as expensive as new cars and as basic as electric toothbrushes.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you\u2019re a parent who needs an excuse not to buy your preteen an iPhone, this might sound like good news. But for many supply chain professionals and consumers, it\u2019s a major headache.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s not just tech products facing shortages. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-manufacturing-sector-slows-moderately-october-ism-2021-11-01\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a> recently reported that <i>all industries<\/i> are experiencing record-long lead times as they wait for raw materials.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How email can help<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manufacturers adhere to strict production schedules and missing the mark during the holidays could be very problematic. That\u2019s why suppliers and manufacturers must be in constant communication. And what does every person you do business with have? You guessed it \u2013 an email address.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a manufacturer knows when to expect important parts or materials that are in high demand, it can plan accordingly and notify others further down the supply chain. One of the biggest hurdles regarding moving products to market in 2021 is the truck driver shortage. In the U.S. alone, it\u2019s estimated there is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/10\/19\/economy\/trucking-short-drivers\/index.html\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shortage of 80,000 truckers<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supply chain disruptions are even more complex in the U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/57810729\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to the BBC<\/a>, while the driver shortage is an issue across Europe, it\u2019s worse in Great Britain. That\u2019s thanks in part to the impact Brexit had on the ability for drivers from other countries to get back into the U.K.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other factors can delay the arrival of shipments as well. Many shipping containers are stuck in ports waiting to be moved. Natural disasters such as wildfires, hurricanes, and major snowstorms can also throw things for a loop. Then, certain events or data points may be used to trigger emails to supply chain partners.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.emailonacid.com\/blog\/article\/email-marketing\/10-best-ways-to-use-dynamic-content-in-email\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dynamic content<\/a> that updates information whenever an email is opened takes those communications to another level. Brands do it for consumers who want to track individual packages, so why not implement a B2B version earlier in the supply chain? B2B email communication doesn\u2019t have to be boring, right?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, email can do much more than that. That\u2019s especially true now that consumers feel safer about in-person shopping in 2021 thanks to COVID-19 vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Normally, earning space on the shelves of a major retailer is a big deal for brands. But thanks to the myriad of supply chain problems, the 2021 holiday shopping season is a different story.
