And yet, security breaches and compromised accounts are becoming far too common, and compliance and security teams are constantly racking their brains to identify vulnerabilities and how to prevent them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At Mailgun, we&rsquo;ve recently noticed an increase in the number of customer accounts with unauthorized use on them. This isn\u2019t anything new, but the current increase did give us pause, so we decided to investigate. Our investigation found the usual culprits like the accidental\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/docs.github.com\/en\/free-pro-team@latest\/github\/administering-a-repository\/about-secret-scanning\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>exposure of credentials on Github<\/u><\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/fr\/blog\/it-and-engineering\/indicateurs-mots-passe-pas-pour-humains\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>credential stuffing<\/u><\/a>\u00a0attacks, but what we hadn\u2019t seen before was something that affected our customers using Laravel.<\/p>\n\r\n    <nav data-content-type=\"longform\" class=\"toc-block longform-spacings px-5 py-6 px-md-6 px-lg-7 py-md-7 bg-light fs-sm rounded-lg\" aria-labelledby=\"toc-title-7801\"><p class=\"h5 m-0\" id=\"toc-title-7801\">Table des mati\u00e8res<\/p><div class=\"d-flex mt-3\"><div class=\"w-auto fw-bold text-accent d-flex me-2\">01<\/div><div class=\"d-flex flex-column\"><a class=\"fw-bold scrollme link-body-color text-accent\" href=\"#whats-going-on-with-laravel\">What\u2019s going on with Laravel?<\/a><\/div><\/div><div class=\"d-flex mt-3\"><div class=\"w-auto fw-bold text-accent d-flex me-2\">02<\/div><div class=\"d-flex flex-column\"><a class=\"fw-bold scrollme link-body-color text-accent\" href=\"#why-does-this-matter-for-mailgun\">Why does this matter for Mailgun?<\/a><\/div><\/div><div class=\"d-flex mt-3\"><div class=\"w-auto fw-bold text-accent d-flex me-2\">03<\/div><div class=\"d-flex flex-column\"><a class=\"fw-bold scrollme link-body-color text-accent\" href=\"#how-can-you-stay-protected\">How can you stay protected?<\/a><\/div><\/div><div class=\"d-flex mt-3\"><div class=\"w-auto fw-bold text-accent d-flex me-2\">04<\/div><div class=\"d-flex flex-column\"><a class=\"fw-bold scrollme link-body-color text-accent\" href=\"#why-are-we-telling-you-this\">Why are we telling you this?<\/a><\/div><\/div><\/nav>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s going on with Laravel?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/laravel.com\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u><b>Laravel<\/b><\/u><\/a><b>\u00a0is a very popular PHP framework used by developers around the world.<\/b>\u00a0Laravel includes a debug mode that helps those developers find problems and identify errors in their code while developing a web application.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, by itself, isn\u2019t a problem because this is usually something only used during development.\u00a0<b>The problem arises when the web application goes live and debug mode is not turned off.\u00a0<\/b>When this happens, sensitive information like passwords, keys, and database information can be exposed when an exception occurs, like the screenshot below shows.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4845\" width=\"727\" height=\"551\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug.jpeg\" alt=\"debug\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug.jpeg 727w, https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug-300x227.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 727px) 100vw, 727px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To be clear, this is not a bug or vulnerability with Laravel.\u00a0<b>This is simply a step that can be overlooked by the developers when taking a site live.<\/b>\u00a0It\u2019s also not a new problem &#8211; we\u2019ve found many discussions around this topic on forums and threads online. But it does seem that bad actors have caught wind of this and are now actively searching for these exposures.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While looking into the above issue, we also noticed something else happening with a smaller subset of Laravel applications. On a few occasions, the developer misplaced files in a way that allowed the entire Laravel application to be served out of the web directory, instead of just the \u00ab\u00a0public\u00a0\u00bb directory. When this happens, the .env file containing all of the same sensitive information is exposed, as shown in the previous screenshot. If this is done, you can simply use your web browser and visit the file directly, if you know the path. Check out the screenshot below to see how this looks.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4846\" width=\"1068\" height=\"1214\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug2.jpeg\" alt=\"debug2\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug2.jpeg 1068w, https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug2-264x300.jpeg 264w, https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug2-768x873.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug2-901x1024.jpeg 901w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1068px) 100vw, 1068px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why does this matter for Mailgun?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, if this sensitive information is available and gets in the hands of the wrong person (i.e. spammers), then you can bet your bottom dollar that\u00a0<b>there will be\u00a0<\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/fr\/blog\/deliverability\/common-phishing-email-warning-signs\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u><b>unwanted messages<\/b><\/u><\/a><b>\u00a0soon flowing through the compromised mail server<\/b>. But how do the spammers find this information?<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, it\u2019s kind of easy. If debug mode isn\u2019t turned off when an application is in production mode, an attacker can trigger an exception by using a specially crafted payload in an HTTP request. Once that happens, they\u2019re greeted with the debug page, and the sensitive information is then scraped and either used or sold. Granted, they don\u2019t know all of the websites that are vulnerable to this attack, but that doesn\u2019t stop them.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hackers are relentless. They\u2019ll iterate over lists of IPs, domains, and paths until they get lucky and find a website that either had the debug mode still enabled, or left the .env file in the open. To make matters worse,\u00a0<b>bad actors have simplified this process making it easier than ever to find these vulnerabilities with tools<\/b>\u00a0like the one shown below.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4847\" width=\"1070\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug3.jpeg\" alt=\"debug3\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug3.jpeg 1070w, https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug3-300x141.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug3-768x362.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/debug3-1024x482.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1070px) 100vw, 1070px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can you stay protected?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>First and foremost, turn debug mode off when you\u2019re taking your site live.\u00a0<\/b>Debugging issues with code is extremely important and helpful for developers, but it is not intended to be used in a production environment.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Secondly, be careful when you\u2019re moving files around.<\/b>\u00a0Never, ever put your .env file in the web directory. It may seem obvious to most, but the fact is, there are loads of examples showing that this sort of thing is happening far too frequently.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why are we telling you this?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We want a healthy email ecosystem. We hate spam (<i>really<\/i>\u00a0hate it) and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/fr\/blog\/deliverability\/securite-sur-internet-se-proteger-contre-le-spam\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>we\u2019ll do anything in our power to help the email community to fight it<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only that, but this is a bigger problem than just the malicious use of mail servers. The sensitive information being exposed in these attacks can be used by hackers to steal data or develop further attacks on systems.
