It\u2019s not only your personal bank account, credit cards, and personal data at risk, but also all of your customer data. Here\u2019s a list of some common ways your email account can be exposed and compromised:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Your password is insufficiently strong and therefore easy to decrypt.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Someone has leaked your API keys or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/pt\/products\/send\/smtp\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SMTP credentials<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ve fallen for a phishing scam or clicked on a malicious link, accidentally downloading malware that opened a backdoor for scammers to gain access to your account.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You\u2019ve exposed yourself by signing onto public wifi without using a VPN.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a best practice, we recommend that you always check your recent activity and investigate any suspicious activity you don\u2019t recognize. You should take your online security as seriously as fraud charges on your credit card. This way, even if your account is compromised, you can nip the hack in the bud and quickly work to minimize and reverse damages.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What do I do if my account is compromised?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s say that the worst has happened, and your account has already been compromised. What can you do? Here are some things you can do right away.<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reset API keys and SMTP credentials<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Assess the damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reverse or address the damage<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strengthen passwords<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s dig into each of these below.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Reset API keys and SMTP credentials<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first thing that you need to do is cut the spammers\u2019 access to your accounts. As an admin, you\u2019ll need to reset your account\u2019s API keys and SMTP credentials for any domain that seems to have issues. The faster you do this, the better off you\u2019ll be.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Assess the damage<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you have new keys and credentials, it\u2019s time to check how much damage was done. Like the holidays, you&#8217;ll have some cleaning up to do once the chaos is over.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, you may face negative consequences because the hackers have probably sent out spam messages authenticated with your actual domains\/dedicated IPs.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The most commonly seen issue is your IP may be blocklisted. This can happen on the day the unauthorized send happened or a few days later. In the days that follow, you\u2019ll receive a lot of spam complaints, so be prepared to work with your marketing team to do some damage control.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Reverse the damage<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you\u2019ve assessed the damage, it\u2019s time to reverse it. Not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/pt\/blog\/deliverability\/melhores-listas-bloqueio-dns-nao-sao-iguais\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">all DNS blocklists are created equal<\/a>, and the majority won\u2019t impact the delivery of your emails, so it\u2019s best to quickly resolve the listings that matter before focusing on the less utilized blocklists.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you find yourself on a blocklist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/pt\/blog\/deliverability\/como-remover-ip-e-dominio-da-lista-de-bloqueio-de-e-mail\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here\u2019s what you need to do to get delisted<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><b>Check the information you received when you\u2019re informed that you\u2019re blocklisted. <\/b>Most blocklist vendors will include a URL for you to begin the blocklist removal process.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><b>Send over the information requested by the blocklist vendor. <\/b>Most reputable blocklist vendors will have a clear self-service path to delisting that involves sending them your contact information and any comments as to the possible reason for the block.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a benefit of <a href=\"\/products\/inbox\/deliverability-services\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mailgun&#8217;s Deliverability Service<\/a>, we\u2019ve automated the monitoring of all major blocklists to check them in real-time. Ensure that your new password is sufficiently strong. Then, set a strong password for the compromised email account and strengthen your cybersecurity practices. Besides strengthening your security software, you can also:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restrict API key and SMTP credential access, if possible<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Enable two-factor authentication (2FA)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s go over each of these in detail below.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I restrict API key and SMTP credential access?<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anyone with access could have contributed to your credentials becoming compromised.
