When a message is sent, the sending mail server (you) <b>makes a connection<\/b> with the receiving mail server (your recipient, if that wasn\u2019t obvious). <b>Your recipient\u2019s server can see your IP address, and the two servers exchange relevant information<\/b> before your server sends your SMTP mail. Your recipient\u2019s email server can then u<b>se the SPF record for your sending domain or hostname to confirm that the IP address is authorized to send mail on behalf of your domain<\/b>.<br \/>\nIf the address is authorized, the validation is complete and the recipient\u2019s server accepts the message and the email delivery.  This is why configuring your SPF record correctly in your domain\u2019s DNS settings is so crucial. However, the prefix you choose to accompany \u201c<code><i>all<\/i><\/code>\u201d will determine how mail servers react to the results.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code><i>\u2013all<\/i><\/code> If an exact match is not found, the incoming mail server should reject the message completely.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code><i>~all<\/i><\/code> &#8211; This is known as a \u201csoftfail.\u201d If you use this and the incoming mail server can\u2019t authenticate the sender, the message will still send but will most likely go to a junk folder.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code><i>+all<\/i><\/code> This actually allows any server to send from your specific domain. It essentially thwarts most of the goals of SPF and is probably not the best choice.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><code><i>?all<\/i><\/code> This passes on a neutral result. \u201cI can neither confirm nor deny!\u201d This is almost essentially the same as not having one at all.<\/p>\n    <div data-content-type=\"longform\"  class=\"callout text-body-color px-5 py-6 px-md-6 px-lg-7 py-md-7 longform-spacings rounded-lg bg-light\" data-theme=\"light\">\r\n\r\n        <div class=\"content-body\"> If you want even more control over incoming mail servers\u2019 interactions with your email authentication protocols, you\u2019ll want to look into <a href='https:\/\/www.mailgun.com\/pt\/blog\/deliverability\/autenticacao-e-mail-identidade-envio\/'>DMARC<\/a>. Misplaced tags or missing spaces can cause SPF validation to fail.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Note:<\/b> Your SPF record can&#8217;t be longer than 255 characters and you can only use up to ten &#8220;<b>include<\/b>&#8221; tags or lookups.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Publish the new SPF record to your DNS records<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that you&#8217;ve set up your SPF record, go ahead and publish it to your DNS. Once the records have propagated (which can take up to 48 hours), the SPF record will be good to go and your domain will officially enjoy an extra layer of security.<\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do I check an SPF record?<\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can perform an SPF check by using an online tool like <a href=\"https:\/\/mxtoolbox.com\/spf.aspx\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MxToolbox&#8217;s SPF checker<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/toolbox.googleapps.com\/apps\/checkmx\/\" target=\"_tabs\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Google Admin Toolbox<\/a>. All you need to do is input your domain name, and the site will return the current SPF record associated with it.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can also check for any errors that might be causing an issue with your SPF record.
