Return path

Return path

The Return Path, also known as the envelope sender or bounce address, is an address specified during the SMTP transaction that tells receiving servers where to send bounce notifications (non-delivery reports).

  • It’s not always the same as the From address that users see.
  • It’s included in the email’s “Return-Path” header, which is typically added by the receiving mail server after processing.

Why it matters:

  • Bounce handling: When an email can’t be delivered, the bounce message goes to the return path address.
  • Reputation tracking: Inbox providers often associate deliverability and reputation with the domain in the return path, not just the visible “From” address.
  • SPF alignment: The return path domain is what SPF checks against, so it’s critical to use a domain you control and that has a valid SPF record.
  • Domain alignment (DMARC): For full alignment under DMARC, the return path domain should match (or align with) the visible “From” domain.
