Envelope from (Return-path / MAIL FROM)

Envelope from (Return-path / MAIL FROM)

The envelope from, also known as the return-path or MAIL FROM, is the address used during the SMTP transaction to indicate where bounce messages should be sent. It’s part of the “envelope” of the email, which is used for routing and delivery, not for display to the recipient.

This address:

  • May differ from the “From” address seen by the user (called the header from)
  • Is checked during SPF authentication
  • Often uses a subdomain (like bounce.domain.com) to help with deliverability and bounce tracking

Proper configuration of the envelope from domain, including SPF records and consistent alignment, helps ensure mail is accepted and routed correctly.
