Inbound processing

Inbound processing

Inbound processing refers to the ability to receive and parse incoming email through your domain using an Email Service Provider (ESP) like Mailgun. Instead of storing or forwarding the message, Mailgun captures the full content of the email – including headers, body, and attachments – and sends it to your application via a webhook for custom handling.

This feature enables use cases like:

  • Handling direct replies to outbound emails
  • Creating support tickets from email
  • Collecting contact form submissions sent via email
  • Building automated workflows based on incoming content

To enable inbound processing with Mailgun, you configure your domain’s MX records to point to Mailgun, then use Mailgun’s Inbound Routes and Webhook system to handle and parse messages.
