Sender ID (Deprecated protocol)

Sender ID (Deprecated protocol)

Sender ID was an email authentication protocol developed by Microsoft to prevent spoofing by validating the domain in the “From” address of an email. It worked by checking the Purported Responsible Address (PRA) against DNS records, similar to SPF.

However, Sender ID has been deprecated and is no longer widely supported. Microsoft has since moved toward using SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, which are considered the industry standards for authentication and sender identity verification. Since Sender ID is obsolete, you should be configuring:

  • SPF to authorize sending IPs
  • DKIM to cryptographically sign messages
  • DMARC to align SPF/DKIM and enforce policy
  • BIMI (optional) to display your brand logo in inboxes that support it
