Postmaster

The postmaster is the designated email administrator for a domain – basically the digital janitor who deals with errors, bounces, and any other email mishaps behind the scenes. According to RFC 5321, every domain that sends email via SMTP is required to maintain a functional postmaster@domain.com address. It’s where servers send technical issues like delivery failures or abuse complaints.

Why it matters:

If you send email, you need a working postmaster address. Some receiving servers will reject your mail if they can’t reach you there. It’s often the first place you’ll hear about problems, like being blocked, bouncing too much, or tripping filters.

Tools like Google Postmaster Tools let senders view Gmail-specific performance data like reputation, delivery errors, and spam rates – making the name more than just a dusty protocol requirement.

Note: Route your postmaster@ and abuse@ addresses to a monitored ticketing system or shared inbox so they don’t collect cobwebs (and compliance violations).
