DNS TXT record

DNS TXT record

A DNS TXT (text) record is a type of Domain Name System (DNS) record used to store text-based information. These records can be read by external services to verify domain-related settings or provide instructions, most notably for email authentication protocols like SPFDKIM, and DMARC

In email, DNS TXT records are how senders publish the authentication data that receiving mail servers check to verify the legitimacy of a message. For example:

  • An SPF policy lives in a DNS TXT record.
  • A DKIM public key lives in a DNS TXT record.
  • A DMARC policy lives in a DNS TXT record.

TXT records are not authentication protocols themselves, but they’re the critical publishing method that makes email authentication work.
